Norfolk, Virginia - McPhillips, Roberts & Deans, PLC is pleased to announce that Kathryn McLawhorn and Jim Stebbins have been promoted to Supervisor Accountant and Senior Accountant, respectively.
Kathryn McLawhorn, CPA, has more than five years experience with the Audit Department at MRD where she completes audit engagements as well as general consulting functions for clients. McLawhorn came to MRD after graduating from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. McLawhorn provides specialty services focused on the firm's Government Contracting and Construction Contracting industries. McLawhorn is a member of AICPA and the Tidewater chapter of VSCPA.
Jim Stebbins, CPA, has over two years experience with the Tax Department at MRD and contributes to the firm's Hospitality and Real Estate industry teams as well as their Business Valuation consulting team. Stebbins received a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and a Master of Science in Accounting with a concentration in Tax from the University of Virginia.
Both McLawhorn and Stebbins maintain multiple volunteer commitments within the community.
Two Receive ASPPA Designations at McPhillips, Roberts & Deans, PLC
Norfolk, Virginia - McPhillips, Roberts & Deans, PLC is pleased to announce that Amy Fant and Danita Jones, both of the Pension Department, have received the Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) certification from the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA).
Amy Fant began her tenure at MRD with §125 Flexible Spending Accounts, 401(k) and Pension Plan development and has extended her skills into specialized Plan Administration. Fant has over 17 years of experience in the field and has been with MRD for more than two years.
Danita Jones has over eight years of experience as a Pension Plan Administrator. Jones is responsible for Trust Accounting, Compliance Testing, and 5500's. Her areas of expertise are 401(k), Profit Sharing Plans and ESOPs.
Both Fant and Jones are members of MRD's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer team.

Joy Bixler - Admitted to Partner
McPhillips, Roberts & Deans, PLC , CPAs and Business Advisors, is pleased to announce that Joy M. Bixler, CPA, formerly senior audit manager, has been admitted as a partner in the Firm, effective January 1, 2010. Bixler provides audit and tax services to not-for-profit, construction, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, and retail industries, with more than 20 years of accounting and auditing experience, in addition to serving the firm as a specialist in computer software applications for accounting systems. Bixler recently completed THE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY, an extensive leadership training course and is nearing completion of THE RAINMAKER ACADEMY, a business development institute for accounting professionals.
Bixler earned both a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Science in Accounting Information Systems from the University of West Florida. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA). She serves on the board of Directors of the American Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia as both its Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair, and previously served as director of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach.
Jeff Estes - Admitted to Partner

Estes, CPA, formerly senior audit manager, has been admitted as a partner in the Firm, effective January 1, 2010. Estes has been with the firm for more than 13 years, and has more than 18 years of public accounting experience. Estes serves as a co-director of the government contracts consulting team and provides attestation and business advisory services to clients with a focus on ship repair, construction, hospitality, engineering & architectural services. Estes is a recent graduate of THE RAINMAKER ACADEMY which is a two year business development institute designed for new partners in the accounting profession.
Estes earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Radford University in 1989. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and participates on the Contracts Committee of the Virginia Ship Repair Association.

Ellyn E. Bess, CPA, CPC - Admitted to Partner
The firm of McPhillips, Roberts & Deans, PLC is pleased to announce that Ellyn E. Bess, formerly senior tax manager in charge of retirement plan services, has been admitted to partner. Bess specializes in the establishment of plan documents and administration of retirement plans with more than 10 years of qualified plan consulting and administration experience and over 20 years of public accounting experience. Bess is a Virginia and California Certified Public Accountant and has taken numerous courses in the taxation of employee benefits and qualified retirement plan matters and administration. She has obtained the designation of Qualified Plan Administrator, Qualified 401(k) Administrator and Certified Pension Consultant from the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA).
Bess has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Ball State University. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the ESOP Association. Bess is Past President of the Tidewater Chapter of Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, Past President of the Norfolk Sunrise Rotary and currently serves as Secretary of Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake and member of the United Way Professional Advisory Committee.
